The visit home and the subsequent trip to Okinawa with all her former classmates had been absolutely wonderful for Sakaki. It had been so good to see everyone again, both her friends and her family, and Okinawa was beautiful. She had several adorable little tchotchkes from tourist kiosks clinking around in her bag, as well as several great memories of visiting temples and gardens, of scuba diving and sunbathing, and a part of her was a little bit sad to be returning back to school here in America.

A little bit.

Because there was something else with Sakaki upon her return that made it impossible to be sad about anything, and that something was an absolutely adorable Iriomote kitten.

How Sakaki came to be in the possession of such a cat was a long story; the fact that such a cat not only allowed Sakaki to pet it and play with it, but that it had actually actively followed her around as if claiming her was nothing short of a miracle. She would never forget, that first encounter, when she met Maya and he did not run away, he did not scratch or bite or hiss at her, but, instead, happily let her pet his head and scratch his chin, and started purring, and Sakaki thought she would die right then of complete and total happiness overload...

This had, of course, been on a visit to Iriomote Island, and when they had to leave, it was a tearful departure indeed for Sakaki, who finally made a feline friend, and resolved to the fate of never seeing him ever again.

So imagine her surprise when he showed up at her house a few days later, as she was packing up yet again to return to Fandom. Somehow, he'd figured out a way to return to her. He'd traveled all the way from Okinawa just to be with her, and Sakaki's heart absolutely melted.

She'd never been able to keep pets because her parents were allergic, but that wouldn't be a problem in Fandom! Well, it might be. Perhaps if Harry was allergic, too, but then Maya could still just stay at the animal shelter. He was an endangered species, after all, surely, there could be some sort of protections that could suit them in this case...

But, either way, despite knowing she should probably go be social at the welcome picnic, when Sakaki got back in, she had much more important things to take care of, and that was makings sure Maya was all set-up and comfortable in their room, and then literally spending almost the entire day playing with him and getting him all set up, and just....you know...being the happiest she had ever been in her entire life.

Even though her attempt at drawing an alot yesterday had been abysmal, Sakaki couldn't help being a little inspired by the cuteness of her alot in general. Which was why, especially with nothing better to do, she was pulling out all her sewing supplies, settling at her desk with some needles and thread and cloth, and set to work attempting to make an alot plushie to add to the extensive collection that took over her side of the room.

The good thing about an alot, it seemed, was that they were so formless and bloblike that, even with her absolutely terrible sewing skills, this plushy might actually wind up being one of Sakaki's most recognizable yet!

Sakaki figured one of the best ways to help her get over the trauma that was yesterday's ordeal with transporting the spiders was to throw herself into her photography class assignment for the week.

By dressing up all of her stuffed animals in fancy outfits and posing them for very elaborate fashion photography shots to show off all their pretty, frilly dresses and cute little hats.

Some of her classmates might have thought it was a little silly, but she was pretty sure that Mr. Argentum would appreciate it, although maybe not as much as if she'd have done the same photoshoot down at the Shelter with the puppies instead, but these models were much more well-behaved.

It probably seemed a little unnecessary to say that Sakaki's new life in Fandom was filled with adjustments and oddities. Even if it weren't for the fact that this place included things like falling into deep, dark holes or turning into a younger version of yourself for a weekend or even a beautiful and mysterious Shrine Maiden for a spell, there was also a big cultural difference between America and Japan. Some of it, she was grateful for--so many people here were so tall! Some even made her feel a little short!--and none of it seemed really that bad, just....different. Like the food, especially, and the language, although she could feel her English improving greatly day by day and she felt she had a pretty good grasp on it to begin with anyway! Still, things were different enough that she felt homesick around nearly every turn, which was why it was so exciting for her when she did get some mail from home.

Especially since that included her cat magazines!

She was delighted to discover this month's magazine in her mail that morning and, after grabbing a hasty breakfast, she hurried back to her room, to settle in on her bed, surrounded by all of her plushies, Neco Coneco especially draped over her shoulder so that they could read along with her, smiling softly as she flipped through the pages, marveling at all the adorable kitten pictures and cat drawings and the precious little comics about cats and cat life, pining wistfully over some new Neco Coneco merch advertised on practically every other page (they had a new one with cowboy hats! She obviously needed to get one! What was more American than cowboy hats???), and there was a puzzle on the back page, and it seemed like she wasn't turning into anything this weekend or getting sucked into somewhere weird, so this was a beautiful, perfect, normal Saturday, and Sakaki was definitely coming around to appreciating those!

Oh, wow! When Sakaki woke up that morning, she could hardly believe it! She was surrounded by all sorts of cute and cuddly friends....including an owl! She figured it was probably best to let the owl stay in the cage; she would feel terrible if it got lost! But all the stuffed animals she'd found on the side of the room she'd woken up on could all come out and play! And there was all sorts of fabric and things in the desk drawers, too, so she could dress them all up in nice, fancy clothes and set them all up on the floor, and they were going to have a tea party like in the story books, and after that, they would have an animal princess ball, and it was going to be a lovely time, and Sakaki couldnt' wait to find out who was going to be crowned Princess Best Friend of All Time!

Spoiler alert: it was going to be all of them!

Eventually Sakaki might discover that she should probably go find something to eat or find out where some grown up were, but for now? She was in play pretend heaven and was going to be quite content for quite a while!

Sakaki was planning on spending a quiet evening looking through various cat magazines or brushing up on stuff for her vet studies, but she got distracted by a new Neko Coneco sewing pattern in one of said cat magazines. Naturally, then, she had to try it out! And so she got out her small kit for sewing, cleared off a spot on her desk, and got to work...

...on a vaguely cat shaped blob that looked like the pair of cats she was trying to recreate maybe if you squinted and had a very generous imagination.

Still, Sakaki couldn't help being incredibly proud of it. It was...easily!...the best one she'd made yet!

[[ it's a stuck-at-work Sunday evening! So door and post are definitely open! ]]
